Zelnate® DNA Immunostimulant is the first licensed immunostimulant that aids in the treatment of BRD due to Mannheimia haemolytica in cattle 4 months of age or older, when administered at the time of, or within 24 hours after, a perceived stressful event. Zelnate jumpstarts the animal’s own defense system to help fight this infectious disease.

Zelnate is a novel, non-antibiotic technology and first-of-its-kind immunostimulant that jumpstarts the animal's own defense system to help fight BRD. It effectively mitigates bovine respiratory disease (BRD) due to Mannheimia haemolytica and reduces mortality. It is administered to cattle at high risk of respiratory disease to effectively reduce mortality and lung lesions, which may result in a decreased need for antibiotics.
What is a DNA immunostimulant, and how does it work?
A DNA immunostimulant jumpstarts the animal’s own innate immune system to fight pathogens from the body by mimicking a pathogen, preparing it to better fight off infection when challenged. An animal with a stronger immune system may be healthier and better able to withstand infections, potentially reducing the need for antibiotics or other medications.
How is Zelnate® different from other immunostimulants on the market?
Zelnate is a class of immunostimulant that works differently than anything else on the market. The animal health market has witnessed many different kinds of immunostimulants such as nutraceuticals, bacterial products and fungal products. Zelnate, however is different in terms of technology and formulation, and is the only immunostimulant licensed by the USDA for BRD due to Mannheimia haemolytica.
Why is there a need for something like Zelnate®?
BRD remains a significant challenge, and Zelnate offers an innovative technology to assist with combatting BRD.
What is Zelnate® indicated for?
Zelnate is indicated for use as an aid in the treatment of BRD due to Mannheimia haemolytica in cattle 4 months of age or older, when administered at the time of, or within 24 hours after, a perceived stressful event.
What is BRD? How common is it?
BRD is Bovine Respiratory Disease caused by a complex of pathogens wherein one of the predominant bacterial pathogens is Mannheimia haemolytica. It is very common in cattle entering a feedlot, especially the ones that are not weaned, transported for long distances, commingled with calves from different sources and predisposed by inclement weather.
Is Zelnate® an antibiotic or vaccine?
No. Zelnate is different from a vaccine in that it contains no specific antigens and different from an antibiotic in that it acts on the host rather than the pathogen.
For what age of cattle is Zelnate® indicated?
Zelnate is intended for use in cattle four months of age or older. Zelnate should not be administered to cattle under four months of age as studies have not been conducted to determine the safety or effectiveness of Zelnate in these animals.
How is Zelnate® administered?
Zelnate is packaged with two different sterile diluents and requires a multi-step mixing process that must be completed in the appropriate order. The product includes specific step-by-step directions and graphics illustrating the process. It should be injected via intramuscular administration. Do not administer within 21 days of slaughter. Please read the label for complete instructions.
When should Zelnate® be used?
Zelnate should be administered at the time of, or within 24 hours after, a perceived stressful event (for example: weaning, shipping, commingling or adverse environmental conditions).
What needle do you recommend using with Zelnate®?
For injection, use a needle that is typically used for intramuscular administration. For mixing, use the Zelnate transfer needle, Zeedle™, that comes with the product. Please read the label for complete instructions.
Why is there a multi-step mixing approach for Zelnate®?
This product contains liposomes, plasmid DNA and other carrier substances. It is important that the product should be mixed correctly in order to achieve the proper concentration for administration and for it to remain stable. The product could be damaged if mixed in a way other than instructed. Please read the label for complete instructions.
Preliminary studies have shown that if Zelnate is mixed incorrectly, efficacy may be compromised. Please read the label for complete instructions.
How long can I store Zelnate® after opening?
Use entire contents of vial once first opened. This product does not contain preservatives. In field studies, administration often occurred within 6 hours after mixing and no adverse events were observed.
How many doses are in a bottle of Zelnate®?
Zelnate comes in vials of 5, 10 or 50 doses.
Why do we need immunostimulants in the livestock industry?
With the growing expectations of the livestock farming industry, there are great needs for innovations that can help keep animals healthy and productive. Our mission is Science For A Better Life, and we are constantly looking for innovative products to address unmet market needs. Zelnate is a novel technology that has market-changing potential for the livestock industry.
